Health ACA Marketplace Insurance

California ACA Marketplace Insurance Options
The Affordable Care Act Marketplace offers individuals and families in California a variety of health insurance options through Covered California. These plans provide comprehensive coverage for essential medical services, including doctor visits, hospital care, prescription medications, preventive care, maternity services and mental health treatment.
Bronze Plans
Bronze plans generally have lower monthly premiums but higher deductibles and out-of-pocket costs when medical care is needed. These plans may be appropriate for people who mainly want protection against major medical expenses and do not expect to use health services frequently.
Silver Plans
Silver plans offer a balance between monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. Eligible individuals who select an Enhanced Silver plan may also qualify for reduced deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, making medical care and prescriptions more affordable.
Gold and Platinum Plans
Gold and Platinum plans generally have higher monthly premiums but lower costs when receiving medical care. These plans may be beneficial for individuals and families who expect frequent doctor visits, regular prescriptions or ongoing medical treatment.
Federal Premium Tax Credits
Many Californians may qualify for federal premium tax credits that reduce the monthly cost of health insurance purchased through Covered California. The amount of assistance depends on household income, family size, location and the cost of available coverage.
California State Premium Assistance
California may provide additional state-funded premium assistance to eligible lower-income households. This assistance can work alongside federal premium tax credits to further reduce the monthly cost of qualifying Covered California plans.
Enhanced Silver Cost-Sharing Reductions
Eligible individuals who enroll in an Enhanced Silver plan may receive additional savings when they use medical care. These savings can lower deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and other out-of-pocket expenses.
Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal provides free or low-cost health coverage to eligible California residents. Eligibility is generally based on household income, family size, age and other circumstances. When someone applies through Covered California, household members may also be screened for Medi-Cal eligibility.
Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment is the annual period when eligible Californians can enroll in or change an ACA Marketplace health plan. Applying during this period allows consumers to compare available plans and determine whether they qualify for financial assistance.
Special Enrollment
People who experience certain life changes may qualify to enroll outside Open Enrollment. Qualifying events may include losing health coverage, getting married, having or adopting a child, moving to a new coverage area or turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent’s plan. Most Special Enrollment Periods are limited to 60 days.
Plan availability, premiums and financial assistance vary based on individual circumstances. Consumers should carefully compare provider networks, prescription coverage, deductibles, copayments and maximum out-of-pocket costs before choosing a plan.
